Company Background

Diverse and specialist advice with first class client service

Moody and Woolley, solicitors was established in Derby in 1846. Frederick Baker, son of a Derby banker and silk merchant founded the firm in Derby's Cornmarket in 1846. Joined by his pupil John Moody in 1861, the firm played an important role in the town's industrial boom period during the mid-nineteenth century.

Frederick Baker died in 1864 but with the arrival of William Woolley as John Moody's articled Clerk, the firm became known as Moody and Woolley in 1884. The connection with the Woolley family continued until the death of Leslie Woolley in 1968.

For most of the twentieth century Moody and Woolley has practised from 40 St Mary's Gate, a fine 18th century townhouse and one of the last in the city centre to retain its old walled garden.

Today the firm provides a complete range of legal services and is proud to continue the tradition of serving the families and businesses of Derbyshire in the 21st century.

We aim to provide a professional, personal, effective solution to all of your day-to-day legal advice needs. We use our expertise to complete this work as quickly as possible and our experience to identify potential problems before they arise.

We are committed to providing clients with clear, practical advice; combined with an efficient and courteous service, working in partnership with you to resolve the legal issues that may impact on your private or working life.

Our comprehensive range of legal services are designed to help our clients achieve successful outcomes in pursuing their personal and business challenges for Business issues, as well as Family, Home & Personal Law issues.

If you are looking for a team of reliable and approachable solicitors who will do more than just respond to your needs, we would be delighted to be of service.

In 2004 the Firm acquired the neighbouring old “Probate Court” where after an extensive restoration programme the Probate and Commercial Property Departments are now located. The fine panelled Boardroom together with the historic Library provide an ideal space for meetings, seminars and small conferences with up to date IT and communication facilities. Whilst our premises may be historic and a true piece of old Derby our façade does hide state of the art ICT technology of which we are very proud.
